Self-Awareness

Self-Awareness is how one's actions, thoughts, and feeling support their daily routines. Through the understanding of one's self, a foundation of acceptance and resilience is developed that may support a child through life's obstacles. As a child starts to define and embrace who they are, they begin to gain self-confidence on their journey to Greatness! The ability to embrace your strengths as well as your weaknesses helps build resilience and positive relationships not only with others but most importantly with yourself self!

Self-Awareness may be promoted through the use of Literacy. Christine's Big Hair Adventures series was designed to intentionally create a narrative around Self-Awareness. As parents and educators, we must be intentional and begin a very serious conversation that will encourage the youth to Believe in who they are! They are Our Future!

Social Emotional Learning

Social Emotional Learning is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Christine Goes to Grandma’s supports the development of Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making. It also, offers language and literacy as well the beginning stages to developing critical thinking skills.

SEL is the process of helping students develop the skills to manage their emotions, resolve conflict nonviolently, and make responsible decisions.

SOME POSITIVE OUTCOMES OF DEVELOPING SEL SKILLS ARE:

More positive attitudes toward oneself, others, and tasks including enhanced self-efficacy, confidence, persistence, empathy, connection and commitment to school, and a sense of purpose
More positive social behaviors and relationships with peers and adults
Reduced conduct problems and risk-taking behavior
Decreased emotional distress
Improved test scores, grades, and attendance (Casel, 2017).

Christine's Big Hair Adventures

This book series invites the reader into the mind of a five-year-old as she learns and grows. During Christine’s journey, she learns that everyone does not view her as her family. Christine is questioned for the first time about her hair and has a difficult time understanding why. She learns that hair is part of her heritage and who she is. However, when she is questioned about it, she realizes that she may be different. Throughout the book, Christine learns that her differences are a part of what makes her so special.
